Miguel Novelo: Inframundo in San Jose | Metro Silicon Valley | Silicon Valley's Leading Weekly
"Inframundo invites visitors to look inward and become a rock, drawing on the landscape shaped by cenotes, which are thought to be portals to the Maya underworld."
"Using augmented reality and machine learning, Novela transforms layered terrains into prompts for coexistence with non-human intelligence, guided by Maya cosmology and animal avatars."
Inframundo is a speculative world created by Miguel Novela, merging Indigenous knowledge systems with modern technologies. The project is inspired by the Yucatán Peninsula's cenotes, which are linked to Maya cosmology. Visitors are encouraged to engage with the landscape and consider their relationship with non-human intelligence through augmented reality and machine learning. The installation features rock sculptures and animal avatars, promoting a deeper connection with the environment and its history. The exhibition runs until August 23 at the Institute of Contemporary Art in San Jose.
