Why a San Francisco Mini-Chain of Italian Restaurants Just Filed for Bankruptcy
Briefly

Fiorella, a popular Italian restaurant chain, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for two of its locations in San Francisco: Clement Street and Sunset. The filings reflect a calculated decision by co-owner Brandon Gillis, with both restaurants still operating normally. The Clement Street location owes over $1 million to various creditors, while the Sunset location's liabilities range from $500,000 to $1 million. Meanwhile, new dining ventures are emerging, including an unnamed Italian-style steakhouse in San Jose, and Cafe Velora, a bakery and coffee shop, is set to open soon in the Upper Haight neighborhood.
The Clement Street restaurant filed for bankruptcy on Tuesday, May 20, and the Sunset restaurant on Tuesday, April 1. Court documents reviewed by the Chronicle show the Richmond District restaurant owes just over $1 million to creditors including wine distributors, meat purveyors and the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration.
Operations at the two restaurants, and the two other Fiorellas in San Francisco, remain unchanged. Co-owner Brandon Gillis assured the public that the bankruptcy filing was a 'calculated' decision.
In the Clara District, the first anchor restaurant—a new Italian-style steakhouse—is confirmed to open before Super Bowl 2026. It will be in a new development to support thousands of residents.
Cafe Velora is set to open shortly, replacing the former Ritual Coffee location across from Coffee Llama. The cafe will offer coffee, sandwiches, and baklava seven days a week.
