Toddler and father stranded in snow during bike ride in Lake Tahoe high country
A man and his 18-month-old son were mountain biking Thursday afternoon near Freel Peak in the Lake Tahoe Basin when heavy snow blocked their trail. The man tried to push through but became exhausted quickly. His son showed signs of extreme discomfort, leading the man to believe the child needed medical attention. Search-and-rescue volunteers and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office helicopter responded to the shoulder of Freel Peak. They were flown to the South Lake Tahoe airport and treated by paramedics. The Sheriff’s Office warned that conditions can vary greatly between low and high elevations and urged visitors to prepare and stay safe. Trail updates indicated snow above 9,000 feet and on north- and east-facing slopes, with slushy or muddy conditions in warmer periods.
"The Tahoe Rim Trail Assn., which provides updates on trail conditions, wrote on its website Tuesday that areas above 9,000 feet and north- and east-facing slopes still have snow. Hikers should expect soft, wet, slushy or muddy conditions during warmer parts of the day and snow across much of the trail at high elevations and in shaded areas, the organization said."
