An avalanche on February 17 near the Frog Lake huts outside Truckee swept away a guided group of 15 on a three-day backcountry expedition. The group was guided by Blackbird Mountain Guides. Six members survived and nine people perished, including four mountain guides and five guests. Recovery crews completed extraction of all nine bodies by Saturday morning after weather-related delays and avalanche mitigation work. Five bodies were recovered on Friday and the remaining were airlifted on Saturday morning. Sheriff Shannan Moon offered condolences and emphasized recovering responders safely.
