An avalanche struck on February 17 near Castle Peak, close to the Frog Lake huts outside Truckee, during a guided three-day backcountry ski expedition. A group of 15 skiers was caught in the slide; nine people were killed and six survived. Nevada County Sheriff's Office confirmed recovery efforts concluded and released the names of the nine deceased. The deceased included three guides — Andrew Alissandratos, Mike Henry, and Niki Choo — and six guests: Carrie Atkin, Elizabeth Clabaugh, Danielle Keatley, Kate Morse, Caroline Sekar, and Katherine Vitt. Blackbird Mountain Guides expressed grief, described the guides as skilled professionals, and said they hold the victims and their loved ones in their hearts.
