"David Wycherley, from Everton Fans' Forum, said "his story teaches us a lesson that we can't ignore". "Hopefully [the bench] will remind people to slow down, to check in with each other and to talk and just ask that extra question about how people are getting on in life. "But also to listen as well. Sometimes it's just as important to be that listening ear for the people around you.""
"Everton FC Getty Images Speed's ex-teammate and Everton ambassador Graham Stuart added: "There will be trained mental health staff available at the bench and - every matchday moving forward - they will be around as a support system so that if anybody does feel the need to speak or learn about the support available, they can." Speed also played for Leeds United, Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield United, alongside 85 appearances for Wales."
Carol Speed unveiled a "talking bench" in memory of Gary Speed at Everton's new stadium to provide a space for people to speak openly and address mental health challenges and loneliness. Carol laid flowers by the bench before the Everton vs Newcastle match. Gary Speed died by suicide in 2011 at age 42 after a successful career as player and manager. Everton supporters urged people to slow down, check in, ask extra questions and listen. Trained mental health staff will be available at the bench on matchdays as a support system. Gary Speed played for several clubs and helped raise Wales' world ranking.
