Middlesbrough acquired Matt Targett on a season-long loan from Newcastle to cover the left wing-back role while Alex Bangura recovers from a hamstring injury. Targett fell out of favour at Newcastle after a £15m move from Aston Villa in 2022 and made only five appearances last season, totaling 19 Premier League minutes under Eddie Howe. The 29-year-old defender began his career at Southampton, enjoyed a loan spell at Fulham, and spent three years at Villa. Rob Edwards had also pursued Max Arfsten from Columbus Crew, but the MLS club refused to sell, and Middlesbrough remain keen to sign a striker before 1 September.

The defender made just five appearances last season under manager Eddie Howe, with just 19 minutes of Premier League action.
