Brentford registered a 1-0 win over Aston Villa as Dango Ouattara scored his first goal for the club, securing Keith Andrews his first Premier League victory. Ouattara, signed from Bournemouth to replace Bryan Mbuemo following Mbuemo's move to Manchester United, tucked home a rebound after an initial save from Emi Martinez. Yoane Wissa was omitted from the squad amid attempts to join Newcastle United. Burnley beat Sunderland 2-0 with Josh Cullen and Jaidon Anthony combining for the goals. Bournemouth defeated Wolves 1-0 when Marcus Tavernier's deflected effort gave the hosts an early lead.
Dango Ouattara scored his first goal for Brentford as Keith Andrews claimed his first Premier League win as manager with a surprise 1-0 victory over Aston Villa. A 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest last week furthered pre-season expectations of a difficult season for the Bees following the departure of manager Thomas Frank, now at Tottenham, and star forward Bryan Mbuemo.
But Ouattara, signed from Bournemouth to replace Mbuemo following his move to Manchester United, secured a first win for Andrews. Ouattara surged through on goal after Caiomhin Kelleher's long ball was flicked into his path and, after being denied at the first attempt by Emi Martinez, he stayed alive to tuck home the rebound. Mikkel Damsgaard had a goal disallowed for a foul in the build-up just before half-time, but ultimately it mattered not as Villa remain winless and without a goal.
Burnley and Sunderland experienced contrasting fortunes on the opening day of the season. Parker's men saw a goal disallowed in the first half, Lyle Foster's effort chalked off for a foul on Jenson Seelt. However, Josh Cullen curled a low effort into the bottom-right corner two minutes into the second half and, after withstanding heavy Sunderland pressure, Cullen turned provider as Jaidon Anthony fired into the roof of the net.
