Carla Ward commended the Republic of Ireland squad's exceptional mental attitude before her debut match against Turkey in the UEFA Nations League. Succeeding Eileen Gleeson, Ward highlighted the squad's commitment and energy, despite some player absences like Leanne Kiernan. She wants her players to express themselves within a defined framework. Captain Katie McCabe noted that the coaching changes were surprising due to strong relationships built under Gleeson, emphasizing the shock felt by the team following the coaching decisions.
"They've been top-drawer," said the Isle of Wight-born Ward on Thursday. "I've been saying to them this morning that the application, the attitude from every single one of them this week has been first-class."
"A very clear way of playing - I'd like to think we've been very clear in what we want from everybody. We like energy, we like personality."
"From our point of view, given the news that obviously Eileen and Colin weren't going to continue on, it was a shock," said Arsenal star McCabe.
"I think we want to see that in players, give them a little bit of freedom to go express themselves, I think you'll see that."
