Erik ten Hag was sacked by Bayer Leverkusen two weeks into the Bundesliga season after a home loss and a draw in the opening league fixtures. The Dutch coach had joined the club this summer replacing Xabi Alonso and started with a DFB-Pokal win over Grossaspach. Leverkusen lost 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim and then drew 3-3 with 10-man Werder Bremen after surrendering a 3-1 lead. Managing sporting director Simon Rolfes said the current setup made building a new successful team unfeasible. The club completed its 16th signing, Eliesse Ben Seghir, for €35m.
Erik ten Hag has been sacked by Bayer Leverkusen two weeks into the Bundesliga season. The Dutch head coach joined the club this summer, replacing Xabi Alonso, and got off to a winning start after defeating Grossaspach in the DFB-Pokal. However, their league campaign started with a 2-1 loss at home to Hoffenheim, followed by a 3-3 draw against 10-man Werder Bremen on Saturday.
Leverkusen's managing sporting director, Simon Rolfes, said: "This decision was not an easy one for us. Nobody wanted to take this step. "However, the past few weeks have shown that building a new and successful team with this setup is not feasible. "We firmly believe in the quality of our team and will now do everything we can to take the next steps in our development with a new setup."
