During the State of the Judiciary speech on February 10, Chief Judge Rowan Wilson emphasized the need for reform in New York's criminal justice system. He urged the Legislature to pass the Second Look Act, which would enable prisoners serving long sentences to have their cases reconsidered if they've shown rehabilitation. Wilson highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance problem-solving courts and expand diversion programs for those with mental health or substance abuse issues, framing these initiatives as essential for creating a more human-centric, effective justice system that ultimately saves taxpayer resources.
Put simply, our criminal justice system isn't working... Prolonged incarceration is very expensive, and it does not make us safer. We need to rethink our approach.
Both of those pieces of legislation fundamentally embody the problem-solving ethos we want to instill deeply in the courts of our State... that have the potential simultaneously to reduce crime and save taxpayers.
