Justice Sonia Sotomayor expressed concern over the erosion of legal norms that govern official conduct, particularly in light of the Trump administration's actions. Speaking at Georgetown University, she emphasized that broken norms threaten the rule of law's foundation. She attributed some responsibility for this to law schools, stating that public leaders who challenge legal standards indicate a failure in legal education. The conversation reflects a broader sentiment of needing to adapt and respond to the changes in the legal and political landscape.
One of the things that's troubling so many right now is many of the standards that are being changed ... were norms that governed officials into what was right and wrong.
Once norms are broken then you're shaking some of the foundation of the rule of law.
The fact that some of our public leaders are lawyers advocating or making statements challenging the rule of law tells me that fundamentally our law schools are failing.
This is not the time to sneak diss, Sotomayor; name names!
