Gena Sims, inspired by caring for her autistic sister, founded the Autism Theater Project in 2014 to share stories of struggle and resilience. After starting the project during high school at New World School of the Arts in Miami, she continued developing it at Carnegie Mellon University where she produced her first play, "In the Life of a Child." Now based in Miami, the project has members worldwide and focuses on highlighting the accomplishments of individuals with disabilities. Sims emphasizes collaboration with those who have overcome significant challenges in their lives.
"Everyone has a voice, whether or not they can easily speak." Those words and lessons from growing up with her autistic sister helped set the course for helping others.
"The Autism Theater Project was created to inspire hope by sharing authentic stories of struggle, triumph, and resilience," she says on her theater's website.
"We work very closely with people with disabilities who are exceptional at what they do, but who have also overcome exceptional obstacles in order to get to where they are," Sims said in an interview.
Gena Sims has produced theater productions to pave the way for those on the spectrum, extending her influence beyond Florida to global communities.
