Meta is implementing a new community notes model for content moderation on its platforms, using an open-source algorithm from X (formerly Twitter). This change, announced in January, replaces its prior third-party fact-checking with a community-driven system. Meta plans to test this model on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, starting March 18, with about 200,000 people having signed up as contributors. Community notes will only be posted when users across different viewpoints agree they offer valuable context, targeting reductions in bias compared to traditional fact-checking methods.
"We won't be reinventing the wheel. This will allow us to build on what X has created and improve it for our own platforms over time."
"We expect Community Notes to be less biased than the third-party fact-checking program it replaces because it involves contributions from users with diverse viewpoints."
