Jenny Jing Zhu, the founder of Lush Decor, shares her journey of starting a business amidst significant personal and economic challenges. Launching her home decor company in 2008, she faced a collapsing economy, a divorce, and the struggles of being a new immigrant with a language barrier. Drawing inspiration from her upbringing in a rural Chinese village, where she was the only girl in her village to attend high school, Zhu noted that her past hardships instilled in her the resilience necessary to succeed. She aspired to become a fashion designer and ultimately transitioned into home textiles, discovering her niche in the industry.
"I grew up in a tiny, rural village in China. I didn't have electricity until I was in second grade. I was the only girl in my village who went to high school."
"I left my village and went to Beijing. I started as a hotel maid, and later ran a small dry cleaning business. I immigrated to the US when I was 26."
"As I was learning English, I became inspired by Asian fashion designer Vera Wang. I applied to the Fashion Institute of Technology's fashion design program."
"My experiences eventually helped me succeed in business. I think those challenges shaped my resilience and determination in the face of adversity."
