Euro cloud biz trials 'server blades in a cold box' system
Briefly

A1 Digital is testing an innovative liquid cooling technology for AI servers that could significantly reduce energy consumption, claiming to cut cooling costs by half. Exoscale's proof-of-concept in Vienna employs a direct liquid cooling system, putting server blades in a sealed environment that uses microchannel cold plates directly on CPUs and GPUs. This advancement could enable a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of about 1.05, significantly lower than the industry average of 1.56. As energy costs rise, this solution addresses increasing power demands while aligning with sustainability goals prompted by EU regulations.
"So every generation, not only GPUs, but also CPUs now, are consuming more energy. The current generation is 350 watts just for the CPUs."
"It is a cold box approach, meaning that there's no air going in or out of the server rack. It is only water in, water out, power."
