Microsoft will discontinue the VPN feature included with Microsoft Defender subscriptions on February 28, as revealed in an end-of-support notification. The decision seems driven by low customer adoption and the VPN's limitations, such as not allowing users to select their internet connection location, which hindered its utility for common tasks like streaming. Despite this removal, other features of Microsoft Defender remain unchanged. Recent price increases for Microsoft 365 subscriptions were also noted, with the introduction of the new AI assistant, Copilot, enhancing the value of those plans.
Our goal is to ensure you, and your family remain safer online. We routinely evaluate the usage and effectiveness of our features. As such, we are removing the privacy protection feature and will invest in new areas that will better align to customer needs.
The VPN included in the subscription isolated Microsoft 365 applications for additional security. However, it limited customer options, preventing the use for common needs like streaming.
