Drag Race star shares cancer diagnosis: 'I'm a tough old bird'
Briefly

Maxi Shield, a Drag Race Down Under contestant, was hospitalized during the Edinburgh Fringe and diagnosed with a cancerous growth on the side of her throat. Tests and specialist consultations confirmed the diagnosis. Medical care will begin with steroids to reduce throat swelling, followed by three weeks of chemotherapy and then seven weeks of combined radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Doctors are concerned about potential throat swelling and aim to reduce the tumor size before full treatment. Prognosis is positive, with an estimated 80% chance of an excellent recovery. Fundraising efforts have raised over $20,000 and supporters have sent widespread messages of support.
This little swollen thing on the side of my throat is cancer.
They're working out a plan for me at this stage, I'm going to the hospital this afternoon, I'm going to have lots of steroids, so hopefully they work.
And then I'm going to go on chemotherapy for three weeks, and then a mixture of radiotherapy and chemotherapy for seven weeks.
A little bit crazy, but there's 80% chance that this is all going to be fantastic and I'm going to be high kicking and back flipping like I never used to do.
