Rick Saleeby and the Business of Sports Storytelling
"I was always curious about what happened between the plays,"
"That's where the real story usually is."
"At first, I did what everyone else did,"
"But it taught me how important pacing and audience awareness really are. Failure is a great teacher if you pay attention."
Rick Saleeby grew up on Long Island watching Yankees and Giants games with intense focus, observing plays and crowd reactions. He earned a bachelor's degree from St. John's University and entered sports and broadcast journalism. He has spent more than twenty years working as a writer and senior producer, shaping sports storytelling. Early career work followed standard formats—highlights, scores, routine quotes—but he felt constrained and noticed audiences responded more to moments than statistics. A failed local wrestling feature taught him pacing and audience awareness. He began experimenting, including building a playoff segment centered on stadium sound without heavy commentary.
