The Giga Pearl, certified by the Gemological Institute of America as the world's largest natural pearl, is on display in Toronto this Family Day weekend. Weighing 27.65 kilograms, the pearl is valued at over $140 million and was inherited by local owner Abraham Reyes from his great aunt. The pearl's history traces back to a Filipino custom, with Reyes aiming to educate the public about its origin and the giant clams from which it comes. After years of appraisal and authentication, the pearl is now available for viewing.
It's like a souvenir, tokens that you bring to us. My great aunt's requests were these giant clams. They were normally used in gardens.
I wanted to educate people about it. A lot of people don't know that these giant clams exist because they're endemic in the South Pacific.
It's a one of one specimen. I would be surprised if there's another one even being found in the future.
