An ice storm is anticipated to impact the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), particularly over the weekend. Beginning Friday, wind gusts and rain will transition to freezing rain by evening, posing dangers such as power outages and hazardous road conditions. Environment Canada predicts significant ice accumulation, and variations in storm severity are expected in different regions. Meteorologists warn of the unpredictability of freezing rain, emphasizing the need for precise conditions, which could lead to variability in precipitation types such as snow or rain instead.
Environment Canada says ice buildup of three to five millimetres is possible, increasing the risk of power outages, slippery surfaces and broken tree branches.
Storm chaser and meteorologist Mark Robinson said the most significant amount of freezing rain may happen from Huntsville through Peterborough and down toward Kingston.
If it's not perfect, you'll get a switchover to snow or pure rain. That's the big question right now: how much are we going to get?
