Toronto city council, under Mayor Olivia Chow, is requesting the Ontario government to explore funding options for the remaining stations of the SmartTrack transit project, which has been significantly scaled down from its original proposal.
"The costs have gone up quite a bit, and we can't go beyond that budget envelope because we just can't afford it," says Mayor Chow, underlining the city’s financial constraints.
Council voted to prioritize three stations while seeking provincial funding for two remaining ones, alluding to a significant reduction from the initial 22 station plan.
Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie expressed dissatisfaction with the management of the project, indicating a need for a third-party review to evaluate the process and funding strategies.
