Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow emphasized the necessity of extending the runway for safety, stating, 'For 14 years, Billy Bishop Airport knew that the runway was too short.' She recognized that creating a safer runway should be the top priority, expressing her support for the option deemed 'fastest and safest' by city staff. Chow highlighted the importance of acting quickly to ensure passenger safety, saying, 'Heaven forbid, I don't want a plane having trouble, passengers experiencing trouble.'
City staff confirmed that the approved option for the runway extension would use 'minimum landmass' and cost between $61 million to $64 million. This investment is required to fulfill new federal safety requirements that demand a safety area of at least 150 metres beyond the runway ends. PortsToronto, which manages the airport, is responsible for funding the project, which must be completed by July 12, 2027.
