Vyjayanthi Rao has been appointed as the curator for the upcoming Sharjah Architecture Triennial, set for 2026, with Tau Tavengwa as associate curator. The Triennial aims to delve into architecture and urbanism spanning West Asia, South Asia, and Africa. Rao, an anthropologist and artist, is celebrated for her research in urbanism and its interplay with the built environment, especially in South Asian and American contexts. Both curators intend to adopt a propositional approach to generate ideas addressing contemporary urban challenges and enhance collaboration within the Global South.
Through our collaboration, we hope to open up new ways of thinking about what a triennial like Sharjah can become over time - leaving behind tangible strategies and ideas that respond to the needs and challenges of contemporary urban centers across the Global South and beyond.
Rao's multidisciplinary perspective and understanding of context are expected to bring fresh insights to the Triennial, particularly in examining urbanism and the built environment.
