The National Park Service announced that officials are investigating illegal tire tracks at Eureka Dunes that damaged endangered plant life, raising serious concerns about off-roading.
Mike Reynolds, Death Valley superintendent, expressed sadness over the disregard for endangered species: "I’m saddened that someone would disregard the survival of a rare species for a few minutes of joyriding."
Park spokesperson Abby Wines noted that fines for illegal off-roading at Eureka Dunes can reach $25,000, far exceeding penalties for off-roading in other park areas due to endangered species protection.
Damage was specifically noted to the Eureka dunegrass, listed as an endangered species since 1978 due to its decline from off-road vehicle activity.
