The Austrian mountains provide a unique summer escape, contrasting with traditional Mediterranean beach vacations. Visitors experience serene meadows and forests, hiking and biking amid breathtaking scenery. Instead of bustling beach clubs, the tranquility of alpine huts and glacial lakes replaces noise with birdsong and sounds of nature. The experience includes relaxing under trees, enjoying invigorating picnics, and unwinding in traditional saunas. Each evening ends with picturesque views of sunset-lit peaks, presenting a fulfilling and restorative holiday compared to crowded beach environments.
There is a sense of stillness here in the Austrian mountains. Even as people amble past, head to toe in hiking gear on route to whatever winding mountain trail that morning takes their fancy, there remains a peaceful calmness.
I typically head straight for a destination along the Mediterranean - somewhere with reliable weather, beautiful beaches and, more often than not, plenty of people. This year, I've opted for an alpine summer.
I spent my time bathing in crystal-blue glacial lakes surrounded by unspoilt views of green forests. To relax, I stop, sit and read beneath a tree or on the banks of a pristine lake.
After days spent outdoors, I can return to a traditional sauna that warms my bones and soothes aching muscles. Evenings are slower, watching the peaks of the mountains turn a deep orange and a golden light blanket the forest.
