The televised Eid prayer from Bradford Central Mosque marked the first such broadcast in UK history, bringing authentic Muslim practices to a wider audience. It showcased the entire Eid experience: Qur'anic recitation, sermon, prayer, and community celebrations. This representation was notably different from typical portrayals of Muslims, often sanitized or focused on trivial aspects of culture. For many, this new visibility during this significant day was both comforting and stirring, signaling an acknowledgment of Muslim identity and spirituality within British media.
Typically, Muslims are portrayed positively in the media only if we make ourselves suitably palatable. We must humanise ourselves by baking cakes, winning medals or poking fun.
This year's Eid Live screening was groundbreaking, showcasing the true essence of Eid, complete with prayer, Sermon, and the joy of celebrating our faith.
