Ban pornography depicting strangulation, review urges UK ministers
Briefly

An independent UK government review recommends making pornography that depicts strangulation illegal, alongside other degrading and violent sexual materials. Commissioned by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the review led by Conservative peer Gabby Bertin highlights the normalization of choking during sex, noting a significant percentage of young women have experienced it. As the online distribution of pornography expands, Bertin argues that regulation must be tightened to protect children and society from the damaging impacts of such content. Other recommendations include banning incest pornography and establishing an ombudsman for victims of intimate abuse.
According to Bertin, choking during sex has become increasingly normalized, with surveys indicating that nearly four in 10 women aged 18-39 have encountered it.
Bertin asserted that the law must adapt to reality, stating that online pornography's scale and impact have dramatically transformed in recent years due to easy accessibility.
In response to the rising problems linked with 'legal but harmful' pornography, Bertin emphasized the need for tighter legal definitions and proactive measures for regulation.
The review urges for a re-evaluation of pornography laws, suggesting that choking sex should be included in the definition of extreme illegal pornography.
