British citizen accused of bribery granted bail after six years detained in India
Briefly

Christian James Michel, a British arms consultant, has been granted bail by the Supreme Court of India after being detained for six years on charges of bribery linked to a helicopter deal. His repeated bail requests were finally approved due to significant delays in the trial process. The court emphasized that continued delays raise concerns about the ability to complete the trial, positing a hypothetical 25-year timeline for its conclusion. Michel denies the allegations of corruption regarding a military helicopter deal valued at Rs 3,600 crore conducted in 2010.
Justice Mehta questioned the delay in the trial and said on Tuesday: [The way you are going on right now], you will not be able to conclude trial in 25 years.
Considering facts and circumstances and that petitioner was extradited in 2018 and has been in custody for more than 6 years now, and CBI filing two chargesheets, we are inclined to grant bail.
