Flemming Hansen and Mette Helbk, a Danish chef couple, have fled to Guatemala after incurring significant tax debts while running their eco-friendly hotel, Stedsans, in Sweden. The couple has been criticized for leaving behind 158 barrels of human waste and multiple animals that suffered and died due to neglect. Their idyllic retreat was once highly praised but fell into bankruptcy, leading to their disappearance prior to the announcement of financial troubles. They claimed the high tax burden and relentless bureaucracy in Denmark hindered their entrepreneurial aspirations, prompting their move abroad.
We came very far with Stedsans, but we also had to realise on the way that being soul-driven entrepreneurs on a mission in a country where taxes are some of the highest in the world and bureaucracy is relentless, it is an impossible task.
The investigation revealed that the couple left without a care, abandoning multiple animals and leaving behind 158 barrels of human waste.
