Resident doctors are engaging in constructive discussions with Health Secretary Wes Streeting to address pay disputes and avert planned strike action from July 25 to July 30. The British Medical Association (BMA) representatives noted that various creative solutions are being considered, with nothing off the table. Streeting confirmed the government's inability to improve the current pay offer of 5.4% but mentioned working on improving working conditions. An option to write off some doctors' student loan debts is on the table as part of a potential agreement.
Streeting stated, "We had a constructive conversation with the BMA today and we'll be having further conversations in the coming days to try to avert strike action."
Dr. Ross Nieuwoudt mentioned, "We explored many issues, spoke about a lot of things at high levels, looking at creative solutions to finding a genuine path to improving the value of being a doctor in the UK."
