Helen McEntee was warned two years ago that Rwanda plan would make Ireland an 'attractive alternative' to migrants

The UK's much-criticised attempt to outsource its immigrant processing to Rwanda could lead migrants to reconsider and seek alternatives. If the UK's policy deters arrivals, Ireland might become an attractive pathway to the UK through Irish citizenship and the Common Travel Area.

Enforced deportations during the pandemic were predominantly limited to cases where individuals posed a significant risk to public safety, though such occurrences were rare and could still be halted by a late application for international protection.
