How a Bulgarian cleaning lady became a Russian spy DW 04/01/2025
Briefly

Tsvetanka D., a Bulgarian national living in Vienna, was revealed to be a Russian agent involved in disseminating disinformation, especially regarding the Ukraine conflict. Initially employed as a cleaner, her significant online activity showcased her support for Russia and its allies. Investigations by Austria’s State Protection Directorate unveiled her alleged role in surveillance and propaganda, including the distribution of misleading materials that misrepresented Ukrainians. The exposure of her activities highlights concerns over foreign disinformation efforts in Europe and the influence of social media in shaping public narratives.
"She was always posting nonsense on Facebook pro Putin, pro Russia ... that kind of stuff. But more like a typically confused person, one of those people who is really susceptible to propaganda," said a former employer.
Tsvetanka D. was allegedly working as a Russian agent, tasked with spreading disinformation online and in person, particularly regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
According to Austria's Directorate State Protection and Intelligence Service, Tsvetanka D. carried out surveillance on targets, including investigative journalist Christo Grozev.
She was effective in her mission, posting stickers in Vienna that appeared pro-Ukrainian, yet contained Nazi symbols to propagate the narrative that Ukrainians are Nazis.
