The planning application for the Whitehaven coalmine, intended to be the UK's first deep coalmine in three decades, has been withdrawn. This decision follows a high court ruling that deemed the initial planning permission unlawful. Friends of the Earth successfully argued against the mine, citing that the previous government underestimated its environmental impact. The ruling highlighted the need for a thorough assessment of emissions related to fossil fuel projects, potentially impacting future similar proposals, as legal precedence shifts towards more stringent environmental considerations.
We're delighted this long-running saga has finally drawn to a close. Congratulations to all the brilliant local campaigners who fought so powerfully to stop this mine.
The previous government should never have given the green light for this highly polluting and unnecessary coalmine in the first place and WCM should have pulled the plug on it last year.
