In February, UK new car registrations dropped by 1% to 84,054, driven by a sharp 17.3% dip in petrol car deliveries. However, sales of pure electric vehicles surged by 41.7%. SMMT CEO Mike Hawes highlighted the increase in electric car uptake, although cautioned against making judgments based on a single month, especially one as volatile as February. Analysts anticipate a rebound in March due to the number plate change but stress that continued support is required to encourage EV purchases as price differences pose challenges for buyers.
Although February's figures show a subdued overall market, the good news is that electric car uptake is increasing, albeit at huge cost to manufacturers in terms of market support.
February was a strong month for new private car sales compared to 2024 - a positive sign of rising consumer demand as we enter the key plate change month of March.
We need more support to boost demand.
It is always dangerous, however, to draw conclusions from a single month, especially one as small and volatile as February.
