A crucial hearing is taking place at London's High Court as the Ogale and Bille communities from Nigeria's Niger Delta confront Shell over severe environmental damage attributed to oil spills. The local population of around 50,000 claims these spills have devastated their livelihoods, exacerbating health issues and pollution in air, land, and water. Following years of delays, the UK Court of Appeal has allowed the case to proceed. The Niger Delta has reported over 1.5 million tons of crude oil spills since 1958, impacting the inhabitants' access to potable water and increasing the likelihood of waterborne diseases.
Many people in the area rely on fishing and farming to earn a living. Oil spills have compromised this, making life a daily struggle.
Since 1993, the communities of this region have been demanding accountability and compensation from Shell for widespread contamination of their land, water and air.
