Garda Kevin Flatley, aged 49, tragically died while on duty, conducting a speed checkpoint on the R132 in north Dublin. After being critically injured, he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The motorcyclist involved also sustained serious injuries. Garda Commissioner Drew Harris expressed profound sorrow over the loss, emphasizing Flatley's dedication to public service and his commitment to road safety since 2018. Tributes were also paid by President Michael D Higgins and Taoiseach Micheál Martin, highlighting the impact of Flatley's death on his family and the broader community.
I have to say this is a desperately sad day for An Garda Siochana. Really our most deepest sympathy to the family of Kevin Flatley, to his wife Una and to his children and his extended family, including his parents.
Kevin today was performing his duty as a Roads Policing member. He's been engaged in Roads Policing from 2018, he was a very professional, proficient officer.
