On March 23, nine medics from the Palestine Red Crescent and Civil Defence workers were attacked while attempting to help injured individuals in Rafah, Gaza. Following the assault by Israeli forces, the medics lost contact with their team, leading to concerns for their safety. A week later, international teams were able to access the area, discovering evidence of direct attacks on the first responders. Tragically, one medic remains missing. The incident highlights ongoing issues regarding the targeting of humanitarian workers and the additional challenges they face in conflict zones.
The PRCS lost contact with their colleagues, and after a week of Israeli obstruction, international teams finally entered the area to investigate the disappearance and found evidence of direct attacks on the humanitarian workers.
Tommaso Della Longa from the IFRC stated that the Palestinian Red Crescent medics were initially dispatched to aid those injured by Israeli strikes but became targets themselves.
First responders should never be a target. Our work is to save lives, not to become victims of conflict,
