In May 2024, the Government launched an initiative to address a significant backlog of assessments of need (AONs) for children with disabilities. This involved allocating €6.89m to allow the HSE to procure private assessments for families awaiting checks. By the end of 2024, there were over 14,000 overdue AONs. The initiative resulted in 2,479 assessments being conducted, exceeding the budget by €1.31m. Continuing into 2025, the Government allocated an additional €10m to complete 2,850 assessments, with hopes to improve service delivery and reduce waiting times for affected families.
The Government's initiative in May aims to address the backlog of overdue assessments of need by funding private evaluations for families facing the longest delays.
Despite initial projections, the initiative resulted in an overspend of €1.31m, indicating challenges in managing the costs associated with private assessments.
