The UK Ministry of Defence successfully tested a Radiofrequency Directed Energy Weapon (RF-DEW) that shot down a drone swarm, a first for the country. During the trial, which took place at a secretive range in Wales, RF-DEW proved its efficacy by quickly disabling 100 drones using high-frequency radio waves, affecting their electronic systems. Developed by Thales with a cost-effective price of only 13 cents per shot, this technology represents a significant low-cost alternative to conventional missile systems in counter-drone operations.
"The RF-DEW uses high-frequency radio waves to disrupt or damage electronic components inside drones, in what Thales described as a 'hard-kill' mechanism."
"RF-DEW has been shown in previous trials to be effective from over 1,000 yards and costs just 13 cents a shot, making it economically viable for defense."
