Tony's Chocolonely's advent calendar has left a day blank to increase awareness of the inequality faced by cocoa farmers in the chocolate supply chain. The Dutch chocolate brand's Big Countdown Calendar does not have a bar of chocolate hiding behind door number 10, highlighting the unequally divided chocolate industry. Many cocoa farmers are not paid adequately for their cocoa, resulting in a poor lifestyle that often forces them to use illegal labour.
The company emphasized that big chocolate companies are making significant profits while cocoa farmers are subjected to poverty. The reality is stark, with 1.56 million children working illegally and forced labour instances on cocoa farms in Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire. 'Child labour and forced labour just so some folks can enjoy a sweet treat is an ongoing issue that we need to address.'
