Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, a 24-year-old US tourist and YouTuber, was arrested in India for attempting to engage with the Sentinelese tribe on North Sentinel Island, an area off-limits to outsiders. On March 29, he traveled by boat to the restricted island with offerings and recorded his actions. His arrest followed a tip-off from local fishermen. Authorities emphasized that his actions threatened the well-being of the tribe, which has had harmful encounters with outsiders in the past. Polyakov faces serious legal consequences if convicted for violating laws meant to safeguard isolated tribes.
In 2018, a US missionary who landed illegally on the beach was killed by islanders who reportedly shot him with arrows and then buried his body on the beach.
Police said Polyakov's actions posed a serious threat to the safety and well-being of the Sentinelese people, whose contact with outsiders is strictly prohibited by law.
