Typhoid fever cases in Britain have surged to a record 702 cases in 2024, marking an 8% increase from the previous year. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reports that the rise is mainly associated with travelers returning from high-risk countries like India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. This bacterial illness can lead to severe complications if not treated promptly, and unfortunately, antibiotic-resistant strains are emerging in Pakistan. Symptoms range from fever and headaches to severe gastrointestinal issues, emphasizing the importance of prevention, including vaccination for travelers.
Most British cases are linked to travel to India, Bangladesh, or Pakistan, where the disease is more common, leading to a significant rise in recorded cases.
UKHSA officials warned there had also been a concerning rise of antibiotic-resistant typhoid in Pakistan, highlighting a critical public health threat.
