In Liverpool, a minivan crashed into soccer fans during a championship parade, resulting in nearly 50 injuries but no fatalities. In an unusual move, police quickly identified the arrested driver as a 53-year-old white British man, aiming to prevent backlash and misinformation often exacerbated by social media. Emergency responses were swift, with many fans treated and hospitalized. The police are not treating the incident as terrorism and are not seeking additional suspects, underscoring a cautious yet proactive approach to community safety amid rising tensions.
"We can confirm that the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area," Liverpool police said in a post on X while paramedics were still treating injured fans and getting dozens of them to hospitals.
"The social media part of this is something they have been really grappling with," said Peter Williams, police communications expert at John Moores University's Liverpool Center for Advanced Policing.
