The UK government has implemented new performance management rules for civil servants, emphasizing personal accountability in achieving savings. Senior leaders now face potential dismissal if their departments fail to meet a targeted 5% savings in budgets. Cabinet Office minister Pat McFadden highlighted the need for a more agile Civil Service that builds high-performing teams. These reforms may include job cuts, as a previous estimate suggested around 10,000 positions could be eliminated. The initiative aims to increase public trust in government spending and enhance overall departmental efficiency.
As part of a spending review due to conclude in June, government departments have been told to find efficiency savings worth 5% of their budgets.
We will introduce new checks to identify and tackle poor performance where we find it, and to recognise the good work of senior leaders across the civil service.
