Peter Dutton has revised his stance on returning federal public servants to the office, now stating that the policy will solely apply to workers in Canberra. Initially, it aimed to enforce a five-day office workweek for all public servants, coinciding with concerns regarding the gender pay gap. Unions criticized the original plan for its potential impact on workforce participation, particularly for women and parents needing flexible arrangements. Dutton's later comments advocate a policy resembling pre-pandemic work structures, which included significant remote work allowances.
Dutton stated that the policy would only apply to APS workers in Canberra, asserting, 'I strongly support work from home. I've been very clear about that.'
The initial announcement in March aimed to return all public service employees to office work, but Dutton later clarified that it was meant to reflect pre-pandemic levels.
