Foreign criminals to face deportation after sentencing under new plans
Briefly

Under new proposals, foreign criminals in the UK who receive custodial sentences will be subject to immediate deportation and barred from re-entering the country. Those with fixed-term sentences could be deported right away, while individuals serving life sentences must complete their sentences in the UK before deportation is considered. The power to initiate deportation lies with prison governors, who can also decide to retain custody of individuals deemed a threat to national security. The new measures could apply to about 10,400 foreign nationals currently in the prison system as of January 2024.
Under the proposals, those who are given fixed-term sentences could be deported straight away and would be barred from re-entering the UK.
Those serving life sentences, such as terrorists and murderers, will serve their full prison sentence in the UK before being considered for deportation.
The decision over whether someone will be deported will fall to a prison governor; authorities can keep criminals in custody if they pose a danger.
The MoJ stated that foreign offenders make up around 12% of the prison population, costing an average of £54,000 a year.
