Government 'moving away' from puberty blockers, minister says
"The Government supports moving away from the medical intervention model towards a holistic approach to care based on the evidence," she said. "That is the model with which we are progressing."
"Even Dr Cass herself acknowledge that puberty blockers are effective for some young trans people and recommended against a blanket ban," she said."
"investing much more than anyone else has indicated that they would in support for all services"
The Government intends to move away from a medical intervention model for transgender and non-binary young people and adopt a holistic, evidence-based approach based on the Cass Review. Health secretary Wes Streeting indefinitely extended a ban on puberty blocker prescriptions; the Government will decide on a permanent ban after results of an NHS-backed trial into the treatment's effects. Labour backbencher Nadia Whittome noted that puberty blockers remain freely prescribed to cisgender young people for precocious puberty and that Dr Cass acknowledged puberty blockers are effective for some young trans people and recommended against a blanket ban. The Health Department says it is increasing investment to support services for young people.
