"children in Jersey may now face fewer barriers to accessing inappropriate content than their UK counterparts"
"The reality is that, if the UK brings in age verification for pornography or any sites, anyone in Jersey wanting to access them is probably going to have to engage with that UK age verification system of where we sit today,"
"That is the truth of it."
"Surveys show that one in 10 children will have accessed adult porn sites by the time they are nine years old."
Jersey currently has no mandatory age verification on adult websites, while the UK introduced such measures in July. Assumptions that UK regulations would indirectly protect Jersey children were not wholly correct, resulting in fewer barriers for Jersey children to access inappropriate content. Evidence notes children’s curiosity leads them to access explicit material at a young age, with surveys indicating one in ten children will have accessed adult porn by age nine. Economic Development Minister Kirsten Morel said legislation is being drafted to allow harmful content to be removed and emphasized the importance of online safety. Deputies also noted Jersey users may still need to engage with UK age verification systems in practice.
