MPs highlight plight of Gaza students unable to come to UK with children
"Postponing my evacuation was heartbreaking, he said. My wife, Hala, and our three-month-old daughter, Raseel, are my whole world. I couldn't leave them behind in Gaza City, where life has become a daily nightmare. I was offered a lifeline, but what kind of life would it be if I escaped while they remained trapped in this horror? I held on to hope that if I waited, we might be allowed to leave together."
"I didn't want safety at the cost of leaving my family behind. Becoming a father has deepened my sense of purpose, not only to protect my own daughter, but to build a future where all children can live in peace. My drive to learn, grow and return equipped to serve my community has only grown stronger. I want to continue my education not just for myself, but for them and for Gaza."
A cross-party group of more than 100 MPs has written to the government about Palestinian students barred from bringing children, preventing them from accepting UK university scholarships. The British government has evacuated almost 60 scholars with fully funded places, with more expected. Many scholars have abandoned plans to leave in order to remain with family. Loay*, 26, deferred an Oxford MSc because his wife Hala and three-month-old daughter Raseel could not accompany him and now seeks baby formula while hoping to study and serve his community. Fatin, 31, deferred evacuation despite a Sussex MA scholarship.
